I was asked recently, the question, what is a rugby scrum and how does it relate to project management scrums?
Lo and behold, 'the term was first used in a 1986 paper "The New New Product Development Game" by Hirotak Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka, published in the Harvard Business Review. Borrowed from rugby, the process is performed by one cross-functional team across multiple overlapping phases'.
Developing high performing cross - functional teams that deliver aligned objectives really is the basis of coaching; good coaches are semi-permanently using Agile and Scrum methodologies for the benefit of their organization. (Grow the individual, reinforce the team, benefit the organization).
I love the fact that the PM version of SCRUM has DNA in the sport I love. So here I have bulleted a couple of similarities between both processes.
1. restart and advance your project.
2. engage a group of "functional athletes"
to complete listed objectives within a defined timebox.
3. iterate and re-iterate the process multiple times to achieve desired outcomes.
4. review and reflect after each iteration and also post project / post match to determine what's working, what needs improving, what we adjust for the next iteration.
